I was recently asked to write a short (100 word) review for Golf Monthly magazine. They asked me to pick a course I particularly liked and say why it was so good. It's not easy when you're restricted to 100 words, and Portumna deserves many more words than that - it is one of the most under-appreciated and little-known parkland courses that would happily sit next to some of the big glamour names.

"Portumna Golf Club lies east of Galway City, tucked away in a beautiful old estate of mature forest. The woods are home to deer that appear frequently and the trees give Portumna a rich solitude.
The course tumbles over natural, rolling landscape to present one elegant hole after another. High tee boxes offer tempting views of what awaits, while oak, beech and pine trees promise dramatic encounters all day long.
The par five 17th is the signature hole, with water all along the right. An impressive, great-value parkland that few know about."
