Atlantic Coast Challenge Day 2 - Carne

The 8th green (LHS)
The big question for me was: how good are Carne's greens?

Last year, the feeling among ACC participants was that they were not good...

... this year, they were top notch. I've played here many times and the greens this time around are as good as I've seen them. On that point alone, congratulations to the
team at Carne, and their head greenkeeper, Daire.

The golf was slow... very slow. You never really know why - is it one group who take over 5.5 hours, losing four holes on the guys in front... or is it just an endless stream of groups losing half a hole as the day progresses? Trouble is, it's a links so there is plenty of rough!

Plus we got a good day, and a good day at Carne is worth spending on the golf course. Finbarr's score from County Sligo didn't win a prize, but he started out at Carne with the same enthusiasm, only having a disaster on the final hole, where 2 points would have given him another very impressive 36 points. Fin plays golf on links three times a year... at the ACC... so anything over 30 is damn respectable.

Ronan tees off on the par three 16th
Ronan, with a dicky knee (and a knee brace that squeaked like an old door hinge), played a blinder at the start, was unhinged (see what I did there) on the uphill par three 7th (pic below) where his ball died on the green front... twice... and then rolled 30 yards back down the hill.

The video shows how tough the green is on the Index 1 penultimate hole... and it's two brilliant shots required to reach the green in the first place. A par is as good as a birdie on Carne's 17th.
