Doonbeg Offer Golf for €45!!!!

The par four 6th at Doonbeg
It's safe to say that Doonbeg are not my biggest fans at the moment. I am not fond of their owner and I have made this obvious on social media and on this blog. For some reason, though, they seem to think that my dislike of the President reflects a similar view of their Co. Clare links... which it doesn't.

The changes made by Hawtree have improved the course and I was very impressed when I played the 'new' Doonbeg in 2016. It has to be said that greens have lost their 'Greg Norman character' but then several greens lost that
character soon after Doonbeg opened (2002) because they were too difficult and Norman had to change them.

But enough history. What about this €45 offer? Hard to believe that a links this prominent would be offering such great value green fees... but if you visit JustGolf you'll see that it's true. You only have a couple of days left to take advantage so get booking.

There are two offers: a 2-ball for €90; and a 4-ball for €180. The price includes a pull trolley and range tokens. That is a seriously good deal. The offer is valid between October 22 and March 31 2019, so there's plenty of time to play.

One of the first questions golfers will be asking is "why?" Why is a green fee just €45 at a links that is on most US golfer bucket lists and completed a multi-million euro investment only 2-3 years ago?

Does it make sense? No.
Do I know why? No.

But I do know that a lot of Irish golfers gripe about the green fees charged by famous Irish links courses - prices beyond the reach of many - so now is an excellent opportunity to experience top class links golf for a fraction of the usual price.

There is one thing I would suggest, however, and that is to find out if you will be required to play off mats for the round. For some golfers that's a major turn-off and I can see nothing in the T&Cs that refers to mats.

Another major turn-off may be the name of the owner but that's your democratic right and, remember, Doonbeg was here long before the Trump organisation purchased it in 2014.
